Combined Defence Services Examination, also often called CDS Exam in short, is the job entrance exam that grants admissions to the following courses in the defence academies enlisted below:

  1. Indian Military Academy, Dehradun - The course in the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun begins usually in July. For admission into the Indian Military Academy or IMA you need to clear CDS exam. There are also 32 reserved seats for the NCC 'C' certificate holders of the Army Wing.

  2. Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala - The course in the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala begins usually in July too. For admission into the Indian Naval Academy or INA you have to crack the CDS exam. There are 6 seats reserved for the NCC 'C' certificate holders of the Naval Wing.

  3. Air Force Academy, Hyderabad - The Pre-Flying training course in the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad begins usually in July as well for which you must pass the CDS exam.

  4. Officers Training Academy, Chennai - The SSC courses for both men and women commence in October in the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai for which clearing the CDS exam is a compulsory criterion.

CDS Exams Eligibility Criteria & Educational Qualification

For your candidature in the CDS Exams you require to meet their eligibility criteria and minimum qualification. The CDS exam educational qualification is that the candidate should have the degree of a recognized university for admission into IMA and OTA. For the Naval Academy, B. Sc. degree in physics and Mathematics or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) degree is required. For admission in the Air Force Academy you need a B. Sc. degree with either Physics or Mathematics or both or Bachelor of Engineering degree. Candidates appearing their final year degree course can apply for the examination but will require to submit proof of passing the same or an equivalent examination by the specified dates published in UPSC notice for CDS examination.

The CDS exam age limit is 19-24 years for Indian Military Academy, 19-22 years for Naval Academy, 19-23 years for Air Force Academy and 19-25 years for Officers Training Academy.
