Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is going to conduct Indian police service (IPS) Recruitment Exam 2012 from 20th of May, 2012 for the purpose of filling vacancies in the Indian Police Service (IPS).

UPSC Indian police service (IPS) Recruitment Exam 2012 details Eligibility criteria


To apply for Indian police service (IPS) Recruitment Exam 2012 candidate must be a citizen of India and have completed 05 years of continuous and actual service as Deputy Superintendent of Police in States under State Police Service or Assistant Commandants in Central Para Military Forces (Central Reserve Police Service, Border Security Force, Indo Tibet Border Police, Central Industrial Security Force and Sashastra Seema Bal) or Officers of the Rank of Captain or Major or equivalent in the Armed Forces

Age limit: Candidate must not have attained the age of 35 years on the 1st August, 2012 i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1977.

How to apply for UPSC Indian police service (IPS) Recruitment Exam 2012


Application procedure: Candidates must apply Online by using the website http://www.upsconline.nic.in. and send the printed copy of the Online Application Form with necessary certification done by the appropriate authority must reach the Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi – 110069 on or before 19th April, 2012. The envelope containing the application should be superscribed "Application for Indian Police Service Limited Competitive Examination, 2012". Application can also be delivered at Union Public Service Commission counter by hand.

Last date to apply for UPSC Indian police service Recruitment Exam 2012: Candidate can fill the online applications upto 1st April, 2012 till 11.59 p.m., last date for receiving printed copy of Online Application Form along with enclosures/ certificates is 19th April 2012.

Scheme and syllabus of the written examination for UPSC Indian police service (IPS) recruitment exam 2012


The Examination will comprise two components viz; Written Examination and Interview for Personality Test. The details of the Written Examination and Interview are mentioned below.

• Paper I- Objective Type (2 hours): 200 Marks
• Paper II- Objective Type (2 hours): 200 Marks
• Paper III- English Language (Descriptive Type) (3 hours): 200 Marks
• Paper IV- Essay (Descriptive Type) (3 hours): 200 Marks
• Paper V- General Studies (Descriptive Type) (3 hours): 200 Marks

Syllabus for UPSC Indian police service (IPS) recruitment exam 2012:
Paper I - Objective type (200 marks) Duration: Two hours: Current events of national and international importance, History of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic, Geography of India and the World, Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc, Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc., General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change -that do not require subject specialization, General Science.

Paper II- Objective type (200 marks) Duration: Two hours: Comprehension, Interpersonal skills including communication skills; Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision making and problem solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level), English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level)

Paper III: English (200 marks) Duration: 3 hours: Comprehension of given passages; Precise Writing; Usage and Vocabulary; Paragraphs writing. This will be a qualifying test only of Matriculation or equivalent standard.

Paper IV: Essay (200 marks) Duration: 3 hours: Candidates will be required to write two Essays. One topic will pertain to Indian Society/politics/ Economy/Development, Growth and related aspects. The other topic will pertain to security and related matters.

Paper V: General studies (200 marks) Duration: 3 hours: The questions will be such as to test a candidate's awareness of a variety of subjects and are likely to test the candidate's basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyze, and take a view on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands.

Interview for Personality Test for UPSC Indian police service (IPS) recruitment exam 2012: The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his career. The object of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.
